چکیده
X-ray surveys of the extragalactic universe are now able to detect significant numbers of AGN out to high redshift (z ∼ 5). We highlight some results from the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) to measure the X-ray luminosity function out to these early epochs. At z > 3, we show that the comoving space density of luminous (log L X > 44.5) AGN has a behavior similar to the optical QSO luminosity function. With a newly compiled sample of AGN from ChaMP supplemented with those from additional surveys including the Chandra Deep fields, we present a preliminary measure of the luminos-ity function in the hard (2-8 keV) band. With 37 AGN at z > 3, we continue to see a decline in the space density at high redshift over a wider range in luminosity. We discuss the need to identify a larger sample of obscured AGN at high redshift to determine if an early epoch of hidden supermassive black hole growth occurred.

As a result of deep hard X-ray observations by Chandra and XMM-Newton a significant fraction of the cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) has been resolved into individual sources. These objects are almost all active galactic nuclei (AGN) and optical followup observations find that they are mostly obscured Type 2 AGN, have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (i.e., L X ∼ 10 43−44 ergs s −1), and peak in r...

The goal of this work is to study the incidence rate of “cooling flows” in the high redshift clusters using Chandra observations of z > 0.5 objects from a new large, X-ray selected catalog [1]. We find that only a very small fraction of high-z objects have cuspy X-ray brightness profiles, which is a characteristic feature of the cooling flow clusters at z ∼ 0. The observed lack of cooling flows...

A combination of spectral and moments analysis of the continuous X-ray flux data is used to show consistency of statistical properties of the powerful solar flares with 2D BTW prototype model of self-organized criticality.

We report the discovery of optical and radio afterglow emission from the extremely soft X-ray flash, XRF 020903. Our spectroscopic observations provide the first redshift for an X-ray flash, thereby setting the distance scale for these events. At z = 0.251, XRF 020903 is one of the nearest cosmic explosions ever detected, second only to the recent GRB 030329 and the unusual GRB 980425/SN 1998bw...

We present a multi-wavelength study of RX J0848+4456, a cluster of galaxies discovered through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey. Our observations consist of WFPC2 imaging, optical spectra, and X-ray data collected with the Chan-dra observatory. We find that RX J0848+4456 consists of an X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z = 0.570 and a group at slightly lower red...
